This homey little café and neighborhood icon was destroyed in 2004 by a fire but has reestablished itself in this location quite nicely. Larger and adored more now than ever. Opened in 1919, the bar has been in the Hotz family for four generations. There is history galore in the building and if the walls could only talk, they’d have many a tale to tell . Hotz’s Cafe is a traditional “old style” tavern with a friendly staff and regulars both old and new! The mahogany bar and the bottle-cap bar stools are straight out of 1919. The shuffleboard game is a more recent addition, from 1936. Legendary Cleveland bar hosted Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb to Lou Gehrig to Indians legend Rocky Colavito. Tossed Robert De Niro & Meryl Streep and company when they wanted to film a scene in the bar for the movie, The Deer Hunter (filmed in part at Tremont’s St. Theodosius Cathedral and Lemko Hall).

Tremont Scoops has REOPENED in 2013 under new ownership!  They’ve refreshed their branding, and they’re now scooping a variety of ice creams made by a local family-owned ice cream company. The focus is on the classic ice cream flavors, with a few interesting ones thrown in. Vegan options are available too. In addition to the standard cone selections (cake, sugar, and waffle), they also offer something called a pretzel cone.

Originally, a barber shop in the front, and a blacksmith shop in the back. Later, it was a bar, then a speakeasy, then a series of bars again, with various levels of repute.
